The man who sank while walking on water, who denied the Lord three times — and who, in the end, became the rock of the church.
Peter was a fisherman in Galilee. From the day his brother Andrew brought him, saying, 'We have found the Messiah,' his life flowed alongside Jesus. He was always the first to speak, the first to act. It was he who asked to walk on the water in the storm, stepping onto it; it was he who, on the mountain of transfiguration, said, 'It is good for us to be here, let us put up three shelters.'
But on the night he was most confident, he fell the deepest. 'Even if everyone else falls away, I never will,' he had boasted — and on that very night, before a servant girl, before a crowd, before a servant, he denied the Lord three times. When the rooster crowed and Jesus' eyes turned toward him, he went outside and wept bitterly.
But his story did not end there. The risen Jesus met him again by the Sea of Tiberias. In the very place where he had denied him three times, by a charcoal fire, Jesus asked him three times, 'Do you love me?' Three questions, three restorations, and each time the words, 'Feed my sheep.' From that day on, Peter no longer boasted of his own courage. Yet that very weakness, the deepest fall he had experienced, became the rock of the church that lifts up others who have fallen.
He walked on water and sank. He denied and wept. And he still rose again. The most human, most beloved disciple.
