A man who left at seventy-five without knowing where he was going, and who, at a hundred, bound the promised son on Mount Moriah.
Abraham grew up in the prosperous city of Ur of the Chaldeans. When he was seventy-five, a word came to him: 'Go from your country and your kindred and your father's house to the land that I will show you.' He left without knowing where he was going, settling all his affairs in the second half of his life. Hebrews describes him this way: 'he went out, not knowing where he was going.'
Yet his life was not one of heroic, unwavering forward motion. When a famine drove him to Egypt, fear led him to call Sarah 'my sister.' Impatient about the promise of a child, he tried to fulfill it by his own hand, fathering Ishmael through Hagar. Even the one who received the promise wavered. But one night, God brought him outside and showed him the stars: 'Look toward heaven, and number the stars... so shall your offspring be.' He believed the LORD, and it was counted to him as righteousness. A defining moment for faith itself, shaped under the stars that night.
At a hundred, the promised son Isaac was finally born. But some time later, another word came: 'Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.' He silently walked the three-day journey. Just as he bound Isaac, laid him on the wood, and raised his hand to take the knife, the angel of the LORD called out: 'Do not lay your hand on the boy.' A ram caught in a thicket was offered in his place. He named that place 'The LORD Will Provide.' A man who spent his life leaving and wavering, yet who did not waver at the most decisive moment.
He left his homeland at seventy-five. He followed the call 'not knowing where he was going.' His life was always on the road, between promise and test.
