A young king of eight, who tore his clothes before one forgotten book and turned back an entire nation.
Josiah became king at the age of eight. His father Amon was a wicked king, assassinated by his own officials. His grandfather Manasseh had been the darkest king of all, filling the land with idols for fifty-five years. From such a lineage, in such an age, a young boy sat on the throne — a place from which no one would have expected goodness.
Yet at sixteen he began to seek the God of David, and at twenty he began to tear down idols. In the year he turned twenty-six, the priest Hilkiah, repairing the Temple, discovered a forgotten book of the Law. When its contents were read aloud before the king, Josiah tore his clothes: 'Our ancestors did not obey the words of this book.'
What he did did not end with his own repentance. The king gathered all the people to the Temple, read the Law together with them, and together they renewed the covenant. Idolatry was completely removed, and the most magnificent Passover since the days of the judges was kept. Scripture records of him: 'Neither before nor after Josiah was there a king like him who turned to the Lord as he did — with all his heart and with all his soul and with all his strength, in accordance with all the Law of Moses.' A young king who turned back an entire era.
